All Hail The Power of Jesus Name

Have you ever noticed that sometimes we sing a song and have no idea what we are talking about?  The song was meaningful at some point in time, but over time the song lost its meaning because we don’t understand the imagery or metaphors in the song.  I think that All Hail the Power of Jesus Name is one of those songs.

  • The song is a coronation song, meaning that it was a song announcing the majesty and grander of the king.  A coronation song would be sung in celebration of the king.
  • There is a kingly object that is mentioned, the royal diadem” which would be the crown that the king would wear to denote royalty.
  • In verse two, there are people who are referenced as being ”the chosen seed of Israel’s race” which is a reference to the Gentiles that have been grafted into the chosen nation of Israel by their acceptance of Jesus Christ as the King, the Messiah, the Son of God.
  • Another verse encourages everyone on the planet to sing the praises of the King and give him the majesty that He is due.
  • The final verse draws on the imagery of the saints that have passed onto glory and links us with them speaking of a day when we will be together in the presence of the King worshiping Him in eternity.

All hail the power of Jesus’ name!
Let angels prostrate fall;
bring forth the royal diadem,
and crown him Lord of all.
Bring forth the royal diadem,
and crown him Lord of all.

Ye chosen seed of Israel’s race,
ye ransomed from the fall,
hail him who saves you by his grace,
and crown him Lord of all.
Hail him who saves you by his grace,
and crown him Lord of all.

Let every kindred, every tribe
on this terrestrial ball,
to him all majesty ascribe,
and crown him Lord of all.
To him all majesty ascribe,
and crown him Lord of all.

O that with yonder sacred throng
we at his feet may fall!
We’ll join the everlasting song,
and crown him Lord of all.
We’ll join the everlasting song,
and crown him Lord of all.

  1. Greetings from Wordwise Hymns. Thanks for the explanation of one of our greatest hymns. I always think it’s sad when I hear, “We can’t sing that, because people won’t understand it.” My response is, “Don’t capitulate. Educate!” Do some teaching. Otherwise we rob Christians of their great heritage in sacred music. God bless.
